5 Essential Bird Photography Tips
Bird photography gets easier—and more consistent—when you focus on a few fundamentals that actually move the needle.
1. Use Fast Shutter Speeds
Birds move quickly, so your shutter speed needs to keep up.
Perched birds: 1/500–1/1000 sec
Birds in flight: 1/1600–1/3200 sec
If you want motion blur for artistic effect, slow it down intentionally—but start sharp first.
2. Dial in Continuous Autofocus
Set your camera to AF-C / AI Servo so it continuously tracks movement.
Use zone or subject tracking instead of a single point, and shoot in bursts to increase your chances of getting a sharp frame.
3. Shoot in Good Light
Light quality makes or breaks your image.
Aim for early morning or late afternoon
Keep the sun behind you for even illumination
Overcast skies can help with balanced exposure
4. Get Eye Level and Focus on the Eye
Images feel more engaging when you’re at the bird’s level.
Always prioritize sharp focus on the eye—that’s what brings the subject to life.
5. Simplify Your Background
A clean background keeps attention on the bird.
Use a wide aperture (f/4–f/6.3)
Adjust your angle to remove distractions
Look for natural backdrops like sky or distant foliage
