Preparing for Outdoor Weather When Photographing Wildlife

Wildlife photography often means embracing whatever nature has in store. While dramatic skies and changing weather can create incredible images, they can also challenge both you and your camera gear. A little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring a successful outing.

Before heading out, check the weather forecast so you know in advance of weather conditions. Pack a lightweight rain jacket, waterproof boots, and layers so you can stay comfortable as temperatures change. Don't forget important essentials, such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and water.

Your camera equipment deserves protection, too. Keep a rain cover handy in case of unexpected showers. Bring microfiber cloths to wipe moisture from your lens, and keep extra batteries in an inside pocket where they'll stay warm in cold weather.

Weather also influences animal behavior. Many species become more active during the cooler hours of early morning or just before a storm, while harsh midday sun often sends wildlife into the shade. Learning how weather affects your subjects can help you anticipate the best opportunities for photos

If lightning, high winds, or dangerous conditions develop, put your safety first. It's better to leave and return another day.

With the right preparation, you'll spend less time worrying about the weather and more time capturing the beauty of wildlife.
